Health Sciences Reference Librarian
Saint Louis University Medical Center Library
St Louis, Missouri
Katy (Katherine) Smith, PhD, MLIS, is a Health Sciences Librarian/Assistant Professor, at the Medical Center Library, Saint Louis University. Although she is new to medical libraries, she is not new to librarianship. She started early in life as an unofficial library aide with her primary school library and as a page at her local library during high school. Prior to her current position, she served in a variety of library roles: including two years as a museum collections registrar, five years in a district public library system (as both a library assistant and professional), thirteen years as a reference and instruction librarian in a community college, and three years as a school library director. Katy's research interests focus on education and information literary: her dissertation investigated the efficacy of information literacy instruction on community college nursing students. More recently, she served on the Working Group on NIH DMSP Guidance and on the DMPTool NIH Working Group to help educate librarians and researchers (including herself!) about the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy. Katy is also an adjunct professor for the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies, University of Missouri and enjoys teaching future librarians. In her free time, Katy reads cozy mysteries, watches (and learns) about Star Wars with her family, thrift-shops, and sings in her church choir.
