Session

Overview:

The new NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy has created new challenges and opportunities for librarians at institutions receiving NIH funding. This immersion session will center on how to prepare for the new policy in terms of infrastructure and institutional support. It will include panelists who can speak to how they have expanded their service model, worked with institutional partners, identified repositories, and developed resources to address the new policy requirements. It will also include a discussion on how the policy has challenged current infrastructure and the need for more institutional support to meet the demands of this new mandate. The structure of the immersion session will include a moderated panel, a breakout session, and an open forum for Q&A. In total, this immersion session will serve as a venue to discuss questions and concerns about the policy.

Instructional

Methods:

Panelists will each present case studies explaining the infrastructure that has been (or will be created) at their institutions for the new policy. These case studies will be a jumping off point for a community discussion of aspects of the case studies that other librarians can draw from as they create new modes of supporting the policy. Further, the participants will work in small breakout groups to fill out a checklist that identifies institutional partners, IT personnel, DMPTool support, and other relevant parties related to building infrastructure. There will be time during the session for participants to work through this checklist and share their findings with other attendees. The session will end with a Q&A forum to address any lingering questions. Overall, the panel will address some of the biggest challenges institutions face in this new policy landscape.

Participant Engagement:

Attendees will be grouped into categories such as Education, Institutional Outreach, DMPTool/DMP Review, Policy Support (General), Preparedness (or lack thereof) in order to discuss these topics in relation to their institution. As mentioned, they will also be working on a checklist that will help them identify partners at their institution as well as the groundwork needed to support the policy given their current infrastructure and internal policies. Moderators will also be using the MLA feedback app throughout the immersion session for periodic check-ins with the audience as well as an opportunity to get anonymous feedback about questions related to the policy.
